Prison artwork is more than what you see, it’s a dialogue.
Each piece speaks of resilience, struggle, and the unbroken human spirit, inviting us to listen and reflect.
These creations transcend confinement, functioning as visual testimony, and challenging us to see creativity as a force that cannot be contained.
Our Prison Artwork Streaming initiative presents themed and curated digital collections.
Each collection includes Prison Artwork images and stories about the art and the artist (as available) and information regarding the supporter/sponsor.
These images and insights connect audiences to voices that might otherwise go unheard.
We partner with museums, galleries, events, community centers, law offices, law schools, and others to host exhibits that spark dialogue and reimagine justice through art.
Each exhibition bridges incarcerated artists with the outside world, fostering empathy and reshaping perceptions.

Most incarcerated artists create artwork in a sterile, cramped, crowded, noisy environment, often without training or typical art supplies. Yet from these spaces, extraordinary art emerges.
Through painting, sketching, or improvisation, even with coffee or cardboard or other unconventional resources, artists transform isolation into expression.
Art becomes both therapy and resistance, helping them regain a sense of agency and identity.
Many works arise from trauma including childhood struggles, systemic inequities, and the pain of incarceration.
For artists, being seen for their artwork rather than their crime is an act of liberation.
of those imprisoned will eventually return to their communities. Supporting their artistic expression builds confidence and connection essential for reintegration.
These artworks invite us to confront hard truths while recognizing the shared humanity that unites us all.
Impartial has over 2,000 pieces of prison artwork in its collection. The vastness of the collection ranges from some of the most tragic scenes in prison to the pure joy of friendships, beauty, and the possibilities of the future. Some artwork has been donated to us; some is owned by Impartial for exhibits, and some will be available for sale through our auction channel. We currently work with hundreds of artists.
Creating something that gets people talking about important issues is what artwork seamlessly does. While the artist is often creating in a very difficult environment, the end result is oftentimes an unimaginable thing of beauty, interest, and intrigue that people on the outside can appreciate in a very unique way.
Yes. They are compensated to the extent that they have told us they are allowed to receive compensation. They receive 50% of the net proceeds from a sale. Impartial receives the other 50% of the proceeds to help pay for expenses in our art program. Some artists have also donated their artwork to us.
Impartial will not coordinate connecting people with prison artists for various reasons. Prisoners move around within correctional facilities, prisoners can get released, and communication with prisoners is challenging. Impartial can't take on the responsibility of making those connections.
Communication. We operate in a world where texting, emailing, and direct messaging are all part of our instant communication. That's not at all the situation with prison artists—it's complicated. We do our very best to talk to prisoners on a regular basis, but that's not always possible for various reasons. We like to work with third parties who are not incarcerated so we can speak more often and effectively, but there are people in prison who don't have anyone to work with in that way, or don't want to.
We find artists through many different sources. Oftentimes they find us. We are part of a national system of publications that are in correctional facilities and part of organizations throughout the country that are familiar with the work we do. One of the best ways to find prison artists is by word of mouth, as prisons are tight-knit communities.
We make sure our paperwork gives us the authority to work with the artist. This means the artist has signed an agreement to have us represent their artwork in some capacity, typically in a consignment agreement. We ask for a third party to speak on their behalf, if available, and we request information about the artwork so we can understand how it was created. We also gather biographical information about the artist. Once the paperwork is done, we professionally photograph the artwork, describe it, measure it, and it becomes inventoried in our collection and uploaded to our proprietary database.
There is a wide variety of ways prisoners can make art. First, they might already have natural talent and now have the time to further develop their skills. There are sometimes artwork programs in the correctional facilities, or the artist is in a group of people doing art and decides if it could be interesting or helpful for them. They also have a wide range of resources available. Some have nothing at all for creating art and will be extremely resourceful by using pieces of cardboard, coffee as paint, toilet paper, toothpaste, glue, and vegetable juice as unconventional ways to create something. On the other hand, there are people who are given the opportunity to create art in a more conventional way with paint, pastels, charcoal, and pencils, and can do an extraordinary job taking traditional tools and using them to create their respective masterpieces.

There are two different approaches to artwork streaming. First, we have a subscription service where you can be provided a link each month to have artwork available to screens in your office or school. We also have customized artwork streaming opportunity where you can have a themed exhibition of artwork for your event.
